Ilia Vassov

I am a professional woodcarver with over 25 years experience. I have a deep passion for the process of taking the natural raw material of wood and to shaping it into something of exquisite beauty and precision. This is a craft which constantly challenges and pushes me to discover new levels of understanding the material.
In 1977 I graduated from the college of artistic woodcarving and interior design in Sofia and soon after I began working on my own woodcarving projects alongside developing designs to my clients specifications and requests.
I began working professionally as a woodcarver in 1980, specialising in applied and ecclesiastical woodcarving, miniature and restoration, as well as replicas of antique furniture and bespoke wood carvings.
I now work with famous artists and institutions to realise their concepts and vision through the craft of woodcarving.

The woods I get most pleasure out of working with are walnut, tilia, oak, pear and boxwood. I carefully select the best wood for each project depending on the style of the carving, the size of the ornaments and the final treatment of the material. The finishing process involves techniques such as beeswax, French polish and gilding amongst others.

When restoring furniture and woodcarvings I use authentic techniques and technologies, with which I am able to recover the missing parts and lost details of a work. These methods ensure that any intervention during the conservation and restoration stages would remain indiscernible and symphetetic to the original, thus achieving immaculate results.

Alongside the restoration projects, I have the real pleasure to work with the great Bulgarian artist Nedko Solakov. In a section dedicated to our collaborative work, you can have a closer look at the wood carvings I have produced for Nedko, which have been exhibited in numerous shows in Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Japan and the USA among others.

A large part of my works are bespoke designs currently located outside of Bulgaria. However I am proud to have worked on a number of wonderful projects that are to be seen in my home country. Perhaps some of my best known and most personal works are to be found in my ancestral village Belchin, which include the restoration of the iconostasis in the beautiful 17th-century church St. Petka and the crafting of the the ethnographic museum’s ceiling. Both buildings are part of the cultural and historical complex Tsari Mali Grad, built on top of St. Spas hill.
